Square Footage Calculator & Flooring Estimator
Square footage (sq ft) is the standard unit of surface area used for property dimensions, carpet installation, hardwood flooring, and painting estimations. Use our interactive room canvas below to compute square feet and square meters across rectangular and L-shaped floor plans with custom wastage buffers.

How to Calculate Square Footage
For any rectangular room or wall, calculate the square footage by multiplying length in feet by width in feet:
Converting Inches to Feet: If measurements include inches, divide the inches by 12 before multiplying. For example, 12 feet 6 inches = 12 + (6 ÷ 12) = 12.5 feet.
Converting to Square Meters (m²): 1 square foot is equivalent to 0.092903 square meters. Multiply total square feet by 0.092903 (or divide by 10.764) to find square meters.
Worked Scenarios
Example 1: Master Bedroom (15 Feet × 12 Feet)
Measuring a standard 15 ft by 12 ft master bedroom yields 180 sq ft (16.72 m²). Factoring in a recommended 10% cutting wastage for Italian vitrified tiles brings the material purchase order to 198 sq ft (approx 50 tiles of 24"×24").
Example 2: L-Shaped Open Living & Dining Room
An open floor plan split into two zones: Living room (16×14 = 224 sq ft) and Dining alcove (12×10 = 120 sq ft). Combined base area is 344 sq ft (378.4 sq ft with 10% waste), requiring 1.1 gallons of primer per coat.
Example 3: Triangular Attic or Patio Area (Base 20 Ft × Height 14 Ft)
Using the half-base-times-height formula for triangular footprints: 0.5 × 20 × 14 = 140 sq ft (13.01 m²).
Frequently Asked Questions
Why should I order 10% extra material for flooring or tiles?
During installation, tiles and hardwood planks must be cut to fit around baseboards, door frames, corners, and plumbing fixtures. The Tile Council of North America recommends a 10% wastage allowance (or 15% for diagonal / herringbone patterns) to avoid stopping work when running short.
How many square feet does one gallon of paint cover?
As a general commercial standard, one gallon of interior wall paint covers approximately 350 to 400 square feet for a single coat on smooth primed drywall.
